American Car Nationals Incorporating Canberra Chrysler Day

26/09/2010 (All day)

The American Car Nationals is a static display of American Classic Cars of yesteryear. The event is held annually at the Queanbeyan Showground on the last Sunday in September. The origin of the American Car Nationals goes back to 1991 when a group of enterprising members of the American Car Club of Australia Inc. had the vision of an annual event where enthusiasts of American cars could meet to discuss their hobby and display their dream machines. In subsequent years the numbers have grown to more than 260 superbly presented American vehicles in 40 judging categories and Canberra Chrysler Day is now a regular and important feature of the Nationals, to include Australian Chryslers. The American Car Club of Australia Inc. has close links with the Shannon's Insurance Group who will again be the major sponsor of the event. Local businesses in the ACT and Queanbeyan have also been most supportive.

(RAB) Tokua Airport

City:
Rabaul
Time Zone:
+10:00 from GMT (UTC)
Latitude:
-4.333333
Longitude:

Description:

City

Rabaul is a township in East New Britain province, Papua New Guinea. The town was the provincial capital and most important settlement in the province until it was destroyed in 1994 by falling ash of a volcanic eruption. During the eruption, ash was sent thousands of feet into the air.
It caused rain which caused buildings to collapse. 80% of the buildings in Rabaul were collapsed. After the eruption the capital was moved to Kokopo, about 20 kilometres away.
Rabaul is continually threatened by volcanic activity due to being built on the edge of Rabaul caldera, a flooded caldera of a large volcano.

Rabaul was the headquarters of German New Guinea until captured by the British Commonwealth during World War I, when it became the capital of the Australian mandated Territory of New Guinea until 1937.
During World War II it was captured by the Japanese in 1942, and it became the main base of Japanese military and naval activity in the South Pacific.
Settlements and military installations around the edge of the caldera are often collectively referred to as Rabaul despite the old town of Rabaul itself being reduced to practical insignificance by the volcanic eruption in 1994.

As a tourist destination, Rabaul is popular for scuba diving and for snorkelling sites and a spectacular harbour; it had been the premier commercial and travel destination in Papua New Guinea and indeed in the wider South Pacific during much of the 20th century until the 1994 volcanic eruptions.
There are still several diving operators based there.

Airport

Rabaul Airport, also called Tokua Airport is an airport serving Kokopo and Rabaul, the current and former capitals of East New Britain Province on New Britain island in Papua New Guinea.

Old Rabaul Airport Prior to the 1994 volcanic eruption that destroyed the town of Rabaul, the airport was located at the foot of Tavurvur volcano, near Matupit island.
The airport was destroyed by the eruption, and subsequently the new airport was built and opened at Tokua, on the opposite side of the Rabaul caldera.

A volcano eruption closed the airport for a day in 2006.
